Can You Help Save Laurel and Hardy?

Dog’s Trust Bosnia has begun its campaign of mass sterilisation of stray and pet dogs in Sarajevo and East Sarajevo. The proposed goal is to spay and neuter 3000 dogs by the end of June. Many of the rescuers we are involved with in Bosnia are assisting in this campaign, helping to catch dogs and bring them to the veterinary stations for the operation and also for treatment for parasites and other illnesses. The dogs are then put back on the street.dogstrust This is a much needed campaign, a count of the dogs last year showed that there were upwards of 11,000 strays in Sarajevo. As those of you who follow this blog know, many of these strays are routinely abused, shot, tortured. Also, you know that the shelters in Sarajevo are horrifically inadequate. Spay-neuter programs combined with education of the public is perhaps the only way to address the shocking state of affairs regarding strays (dogs and cats) in the country. Already rescuers have brought considerable numbers of dogs to the Dog’s Trust vet faculty for their operation. Many of the dogs they are finding are quite sick or very young, too young to be sterilised.

984021_10201165775363824_2119429506_nTwo sick dogs are Laurel and Hardy (or Lolek and Bolek in Serbo-Croatian). Lolek or Laurel, is in the poorest condition of the two.
They are both suffering from demodex. A third dog found was their mother who just had a litter of puppies, so the rescuers could only take the two male dogs to be neutered, get their rabies vaccination and their 983678_10201165648600655_1877464078_nmicrochip. The rescuers brought the two dogs, who they named Laurel and Hardy, to the vet faculty and explained the dogs need to get medication and proper treatment, that they were not there just to get sterilised. Unfortunately the treatment for demodex is lengthy, sometimes taking months to cure. There are no facilities provided by this spay-neuter program to take in such dogs. The vets were only able to give the medication to the rescuers so they could apply it to the dogs themselves. Unless the dogs can be put into foster homes or pension (90 – 120 euros/ 120 – 160 USD per month), it will be impossible for them to be treated.

Yesterday, rescuers Jovanka 970390_10201165848405650_1261957389_nPopovac-Tempany and Mia Ožegovic picked Laurel and Hardy up from the vet faculty where they were neutered. In short notice and with very little funds Mia and Jovanka managed to arrange accommodation for both of the dogs.
They are now surrounded with rabbits, chickens and have their own house, a place of safety for the first time in their lives. Although confused and disorientated at first, they soon explored their garden and new home.

972107_10201165860485952_1558205249_nTheir stay per month for both of them is 60 Euros + 35 Euros for food (this could be cheaper but they are very very skinny and due to their health issues, they need high quality food) The vet & medication costs are still being discussed, but some preliminary estimates say that only Laurel will receive one dose of Ivermectin (for demodex) and that they need a lot of nutrition and vitamins.  Mia and Jovanka will try and make an agreement with the vet faculty and Dog’s Trust so they supply the monthly dosage of medication.

NEW: Video of Laurel and Hardy!

Laurel will be a semi long coated dashing beauty when his therapy is over. Even now, they both display a very kind, very mellow temperament, very assertive. We are thinking after 2-3 months, they can be adopted. If you are interested please contact Mia directly. If you can help sponsor Laurel and Hardy’s stay in their new home please do so via PayPal at: CHUPKO71@GMAIL.COM and mark for Laurel and Hardy. Or you can make a donation via AWAB below, again make sure you state who the donation is for.

The rescuers are going to try and bring their mother and her young puppies to a safe place and help is also needed for this. They were all found ‘in the middle of nowhere’ said Mia. The mother is showing early signs of demodex (see slide show below for more photographs).

Other sad stories: this dog was seen outside one of the shelters in Sarajevo. Those who saw him say it seems he must have fallen into a nearby sewer.

  1. I am so sick and tired of Animal Cruelty of all Animals. There is only so much I can do, since i live paycheck to paycheck. I donate what i can and when I can, but still seems NOT to be enough, because it seems that cruelty happens alot more than LOVE and Protection. I am so sick of having or trying to believe in having faith for/ and of the human race to STOP this EVIL MADNESS of Animal CRUELTY, Karma is a bitch, and you shall REAP what you SEW.

    • I feel the same about animals. I am on disability so funds are far and in between. We each MUST do what we can for sure.

      • for sure, it’s such a sad state of affairs. What has happened to the human race to make people like this?

    • I cannot see an end to this abuse towards stray dogs:(( they did not ask to be put on this earth or to be terribly abused. What did they ever do to deserve such treatment??? the word ‘human’ should be removed from the dictionary as there is no such being any longer. Yes, by all means neuter/spay these souls to ensure that there is not a new generation, but, to put them back in their environment is a step nearer to an agonising death. People should be educated re how to tolerate these lonely souls in their communities. Abuse is NOT the way forward and barbaric, but these countries are not alone, we have dog baiting/fighting/abuse and death in our own country, There is no policing of crimes now and certainly no punishment to ensure people/animal are not abused. It appears that the law is there to protect the perpetrator and not the victim…need to get the priorities right me thinks.

    • I’m the same. I’m on crutches and I give ONLY to animal charities but it never ends. I feel so bad for the animals and donate regularly to several and sporadically when asked but I wish there was some government help too, they give plenty in foreign aid but animals have to rely on charity and the kindness of volunteers. How about donating the taxes from pet food companies as one example.Paul Mc Cartney could have paid for the release of every bile bear if he’d got a pre-nup and not arrogantly and vainly allowed Heather Mills to strip him of millions. What does he do as our most famous vegetarian?

  2. We had a pitbull that had this and my husbands father told us a old remedy that helped our dogs skin amazingly in a couple days.Leave the dogs outside for this treatment so they don’t get things all dirty.Take used motor oil and boric acid mix together and rub all over them and leave them outside for a few days for this stuff to work. They will need a wash job after this but within a few days our pitbull was looking very good and his hair started coming back in no time.I was really amazed at the results. He chewed all the fur off his butt and tail and this really helped.

    • This is an old wives tale. Medical treatment is needed for mange whatever the form it takes. PLEASE DO NOT apply motor oil to any animal! It is toxic to them.

      • Demodex mites are very difficult to treat. In general, mites are difficult to treat precisely because most chemicals which are toxic to them such as Ivermectin and Permethrin are also very toxic to dogs (and to humans). Motor oil may be toxic to mites, but it will also cause serious harm to the dog, including long term damage even if the dog survives the initial treatment.

      • Boric acid and/or used motor oil are both HIGHLY toxic to people and animals! Please disregard this advice as it is completely insane!

      • Couldn’t agree more, Kandi.
*DO NOT PUT USED MOTOR OIL ON ANY ANIMAL’S SKIN*
It is poisonous to everything except car engines. Dogs, cats, in fact any animal will try to lick it off.
Demodex needs to be treated with Ivermectin or .Aludex.It can be a lengthy process to bath a dog weekly and leave this product on the skin to kill the adult, juvenile, young and eggs but it is worth the time and effort.

  3. i soooo agry with u , i lose faith, faith in that this nightmare for animals will one day end, and faith in numans i lost yearrrrrrs ago . it makes me mad dat too little people help , that too much people abuse animals, dat not every single human help . so many humans are egocentrical, they want others to help , they dont want to help themselves . why ???? why shud a tiny little amount of people give their 24/7, money, energy, their entire lives for animal rescue, while toehrs are doing nothin livin their lives ognoring animla cruelty??? they are kidding us?????!!!!! i think theyre are afraid of helpin, despise people who help or are jealous of em i dont know, it seems like all da people who dont help is becoz they dont care . they dont feel like theyre involved they feelk like all tis has nuthin to do with em coz they dotn themself abuse animals . they only live for themselves, friends families bf gf but every time one has to foster an animal, give money for an animal welfare foundation, spend time with animals ect, nobody wants to ! ! ! they wait for others to do all da job as usual . i think everybody shud help . everybody. if every single human being wud know why GOD createdem they wud know wot he wants us to do : he wants us to be like JESUS, billions of messiahs , everyone os us with no expection, put here to save animals, environnment people . but most people dotn udnerstand that, theyre too blinded by i dont know wot, so they will not devote teir entire life to philantropism as GOD orderred them becoz they are deeply heartless brianless and evil . so only a few people, i call em angels, becoz they really r GOD-sent, they do everythin GOD told em to do , they are good kids : they spend their whole lives tryin to save as much animals as posible o are ecologist or save humans lives but they really r passionate, devoted, and even though its so hard they keep up and never surrender and they r the ones ho got pure souls full of comapsison and love for others coz they think animals lives r more important than their own. tat is da best quality a son or daughter of GOD will ever have

    • I think got every good person that helps another person sticks their head in the sand
      Hoping it will go away.
Cruelty to animals will always be there for as long as we see it okay to use them in vivisection and bundle them into sheds with no access to outside because we live the taste of them.
We humans see that all forms of cruelty are bad and make the punishment of those found guilty harsher then others may sit up and listen.
We live in a world were people think it us okay to flush their new born babies down the toilet so it will be an up hill struggle to convince those who are uncaring to care a little more about animals and their welfare.
It’s very sad and painful to see.
Some of us do not have enough funds to keep giving money though but doesn’t mean we don’t truely care!

    • Well said Jennifer. We need to live selfless lives. Care about not only animals but also each other. I will do as much as I can to help. It is really hard when you live in a country where there is plenty of food and mostly domestic animals are treated well. It’s easy to forget about the sadness overseas. We all have to be Good Samaritans and not walk past those needing help but rather stop and give assistance like Christ Jesus expected us to do. Thank you ever peron on this page and especially all those who are in Bosnia taking in animals. You are a God send. Bless you.

  4. Can you start a campaign so we can all sign it. We need to do more than share it. We have to show that people are behind this cause with signatures and names.

  5. Dogs like humans beings are part of God’s creation and deserve attention, good nutrition, care and a decent place to live! We must start to advertise on behalf of animals welfare. Let’s use the social network to help save the lives of the ones who cannot speak for themselves!

  6. I WISH THAT I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS TO SEND YOU,, I WISH THAT MORE PEOPLE WOULD DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING.. MY SELF, I HAD A ANIMAL SHELTER HERE IN MAINE OVER 12 YEARS.. I KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO MAKE SURE THE ANIMALS ARE CARED FOR THE WAY THAT THEY SHOULD BE. YOU ARE DOING THE BEST THING BY SPAYING AND NUTURING THEM..THIS CUTS DOWN ON MORE UNWANTED PUPPIES… I AM RETIRED NOW AT 65 BUT STILL HAVE 10 DOGS, 5 FEREL CATS, 2 PARROTS, A COCKATEIL, CHINCHILLA, ONE LARGE ROOSTER WITH NO TOES,, AND HENS FOR EGGS, I TRY TO HELP OTHERS HERE WHEN THEY NEED IT. FOR THEIR PETS,,IT IS NOT MUCH..BUT I WILL GIVE THEM FOOD, AND MEDS AT TIMES. IF THE PEOPLE CANNOT AFFORD IT. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS A VERY HARD JOB. AND GOD BLESS PEOPLE LIKE YOU

  7. Dieren mishandelen vernedert de mens.
Dieren leven volgens hun instinct- veel mensen misbruiken hun verstand om slechter dan dieren te leven.

  8. Truly my heart is very broken for all of these suffering animals. It’s all human beings at fault—-such shame going around! I wish that I had unlimited funds to help the entire masses of ALL of those suffering, but I do what I can. No animal has a voice & is totally innocent—they all deserve a good loving home & happy life!~ Sharing this story far & wide WILL make a difference—-Thanks to everyone for all you do!!~

  9. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by the amount of work to do, but please try not to lose heart. The fact that these communities exist and that their members are prepared to do something is already making a difference. Don’t try to change the world all at once, but do let your own compassion and strength inspire others to join you. I have been involved with animal rescue for most of my life and now other family members and friends are getting rescue animals rather than buying ‘new’. It does help, it does make a difference, and it matters.

  10. Aaron
U may not think you r helping much but u r. U say u give little, well that is better than nothing, because of u an animal may have been able to eat, or get medicine. Don’t sell urself short, U do make a difference
