Rescuing the Rescuer

Jelena Paunović, activist, rescuer and journalist in Sarajevo needs our help. Please read about her here. Jelena is one of the main reasons anyone outside of Bosnia Herzegovina knows about the dire situation for strays. During last year’s attempt to change the BiH animal welfare laws she was fully engaged with helping organise demonstrations against these changes.

She has investigated the ‘horror shelters’ and shared the story, often putting her own life in danger.

If you have read in this blog the appalling situations in the so-called dog shelters, and in particular with the dog ‘shelter’ in Hresa, it is primarily due to Jelena’s investigative work. No one will ever forget the photograph of the starving dog, taken at the shelter.

xxx But the fact remains that for an intelligent, educated, dedicated young woman in Bosnia, someone who fights a cause – animal welfare  – that the government shows no sign of supporting, a cause that the general populace is against, the options are few, and she is now at her wits end how to survive.

Jelena has had no paid work for well over a year now, but still has managed to continue her advocacy work. She has been trying to find a job in all possible ways but… in Bosnia 60% of young people are unemployed. She is just one more of them (please read her blog, “Fuck this Country“).

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 15.58.32Jelena can’t go on like this. She has one option, to sell her small, but now utterly ruined apartment. It’s ruined because of all the rescues she’s fostered, and because she’s had no income to fix things.

To put the apartment on the market, she has been forced to put into pension (kennels) the cats she rescued over the past eight years and has been fostering, but she has no income to pay the cost of this pension, but also no choice to do this. She is in a terrible situation because of this. She has no possibility of a bank loan, no one in her family who can help and all her friends are in a similar situation: struggling to survive while also struggling to save the animals.
Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 15.58.23
Jelena says: “There are seven cats in total. Other than these, I also have three dogs living in my apartment who were also rescued off the streets. This means that in my devastated apartment I have a total of 10 animals. I have tried to find homes for them, but I failed. For the past four years my apartment has had no heating system and the windows are so old they can no longer hold the glass. I have nylon on my windows instead of glass. Tens of stray dogs went through my flat. When I add it all up, it was nice to save them all, but I have destroyed my life. Now I am trying to sell the apartment in which I can no longer live. All I ask is your help to gather the money to keep the cats in the pension until I can sell my apartment. When people see so many animals, trust me, they vomit, and they bring the price down, and this apartment is the only material thing I own. For the first time I am begging you for help, because I will go insane!

Many of the dogs you’ve seen on these blogs that were rescued and eventually found homes for outside of BiH were fostered by Jelena in this apartment.  Surely we can thank her for all the fine work she’s done by helping fund the cats until she can sell her apartment?

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 16.01.31The cost to keep the cats in pension is 3 euros per day per cat, about 530 euros per month. She’s managed to raise some of this, but for this month alone still needs at least 250 euros. Can we raise this and one month in addition so she can focus on selling the apartment and not worry every moment about how she will pay this debt?

And if you think you can offer a home to one of these lovely cats, please email her directly.

If you can help with the pension debt, you can donate directly to Jelena via PayPal to journalistsforanimals@gmail.com – mark ‘for cat debt’ – or if you prefer, via AWABosnia’s Paypal: donations@awabosnia.org, please mark ‘for Jelena’s cat pension debt’. Thank you! Any amount will help, perhaps you can offer to pay one day for one cat (3 EU/4 USD)? Or better – offer to be a Virtual Adopter for one cat for one month? If you can, please let Jelena know! Email: journalistsforanimals@gmail.com

Flood Rescues from Bosnia – an update on three beautiful cats

croppedSo many people donated generously to assist in the animal rescue efforts during the terrible flooding in BiH in May. Here is an update on three cats that were rescued, and then kept safe by Angel’s Rest of Tuzla thanks to your donations.

10310114_679331748768764_2399252418801957405_nAll three were rescued from Bosanski Šamac which was almost completely destroyed by the floods. As one of the rescuers said when they went in there: “It’s really hard to find words to describe all the horror we saw there, even photos are not the best indicators. That smell of death and despair I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Two of the cats were found wandering through muddy streets, disoriented, hungry, thirsty and scared, and third cat had been surviving for more than a week on the roof of a house. Rescuers had to reach her by boat –  paddling through what once were streets, playgrounds and gardens.

Although this cat was supposed to be wild, the moment she saw the rescuers approaching, she “..literally wanted to jump into our boat.”

10372792_679332048768734_6496390310925054643_nAll three cats appeared to be pregnant, but it was soon clear that one of them who they named Katarina, was very ill.

A veterinary examination indicated she had a severe inflammation of the urinary tract, and was not pregnant.  After days of aggressive therapy, Katarina showed no improvement.

10544404_698129890222283_4339731686591156722_nAn ultrasound was unclear, so the vet suggested surgery to confirm if there were adhesions in her inner organs. Also, there were some cancerous changes on her nose and ears, but it was decided it was best to leave these alone. The operation showed that her uterus had thickened and had serious calcification, so it was removed. But her health continued to be so fragile. In the end, with lots of consulting with several vets, the final diagnosis is cancer, which has spread everywhere.

Katarina is in Angel’s Rest in Tuzla, under the very best of care from her rescuers.  “I just want to give her peace in her last, hopefully, months on this world. She still wants to be here and I will respect her decision to leave, once she feels like she’s ready to go.

10444789_685680161467256_7562923207171600245_nThe silver tabby kitty rescued, named Sophie by her foster mum, also had a vet check  shortly after rescue. It was found she was also not pregnant, but heavily infested by worms, for which she was treated and she is now doing really well, also at Angel’s Rest.

Sophie is young lady (she’s under a year of age) and she’s ready for adoption.  Gentle, sweet and very playful.”

The third cat, Steffi, was confirmed very pregnant and gave to 4 beautiful kittens on the fifth of June.
10352579_683358608366078_8647748015950086372_nVery sadly, just a few nights ago one of Steffi’s babies fell out of the window and died, a terrible accident as there was netting on the window, but somehow one of the cats managed to rip an opening. Everyone is absolutely devastated.

R.I.P. little white butterfly.

The other kittens and Steffi are doing really well, the kittens are 7 weeks old and soon they will need homes.

A huge thank you to the rescuers, to the fosters who have taken such good care of these beautiful cats and of course to everyone who donated to the flood fundraiser. If it weren’t for you, these lovely cats would not have survived.

10402468_698129806888958_2967826431410199988_nAmra from Angel’s Rest says: “It became very hard to recall memories of the time when all of them were found, now when they all became “house” cats. It’s so good to see them have a normal life after that hell they lived before. When we rescued them, we thought they are all pregnant, but ended up that Katarina is just too sick and Sophie was full of worms. Only Steffi came to safety with offspring. Wish this horrible accident with her baby didn’t happen. But, in her memory I will do anything to find great homes for her siblings and mum.

If you think you can adopt one of these cats, please contact Dutch Lansky Schultz Meyer on Facebook or contact us here at info@awabosnia.org and we will forward on the email.

Angel’s Rest Facebook group is here. They and their associated group, Marianne’s Dog Food Bank, do extraordinary work for the strays of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Little Zossy is looking for a permanent home

Zossy a tiny kitten, was found on the streets of Sarajevo by Dzenana, one of the many freelance animal activists in Bosnia She was starving and had a terrible eye infection and looked like this:

Donations from dear friends and people on Facebook paid for her eye operation. She had to lose the eye. This is just after her operation:

In spite of her disability she manages just fine and is an amazingly cuddly, loving and playful kitten. Because I had helped raise funds for her operation I was given the honour of naming her, and I chose Zosime which is Greek for “survivor”. She is called Zossy for short.

There are more photos of her on Facebook here.

Dzenana cannot keep her, and she is in a foster home in Sarajevo until we can find her a long term home. It is not difficult to bring a cat from Bosnia to anywhere in Europe, and also the US and some other countries. If you fall in love with Zossy, and would like to adopt her, please email me. It is expensive, but we can help fundraise to cover the costs. She would have her pet passport and vaccinations and be all ready to come to you. If you want information on bringing a pet into your country you can find out some details here: http://www.pettravel.com. Ideally she would go to someone in the UK so I can visit her, and it would be not such a long journey for her, but we will consider all offers!

But, very importantly, we need to know she is going to the perfect home. Because she will be a little handicapped to survive outdoors, she needs to be an indoor cat with lots of attention and space to roam and toys to play with. You can also teach her to walk outside on a lead with a little walking jacket, which is what I do with my own cat, Ronan. You must know you will want her for a lifetime, she cannot go from home to home. She has had such a difficult start to life we want her to be happy and stable all her life. Contact me for more information.

Update: Zossy will fly to her forever home in December! As of November 21 we still need $200 to cover the costs. CHIPIN

Update: January 1, 2013. Zossy is now living happily in Nevada, USA, with a devoted new mom!

Sara needs your help

Sara was found on the streets of Sarajevo, her leg horrifically mutilated. As I write this she is being seen by a vet. She will need intensive care and medical treatment. Funds are URGENTLY needed for this. To donate, even just one euro or one dollar would help.  Go here to find out how to donate – it would be directly to me via PayPal and I would then transfer the money to Bosnia. I can also give you the PayPal email address of my Bosnian animal welfare contacts if you prefer.  Even just one dollar or one euro will help. I will update this page in the comments as to the prognosis by the vet when I hear news.

Sunday Sept 2, 6:30 pm
Sara’s just seen the vet: Jelena says “I visited vet but unfortunately he was at his home and he had no necessary instruments and medications at hand. He gave me advice how to take care of her leg so I went to pharmacy and bought cotton, bandages, hydrogen peroxide and antibiotics. We took care of her wounded leg till tomorrow. Tomorrow we will visit vet at his ordination and he will do proper job. He sad that perhaps leg could be saved so we can only hope it is true, he also told that amputation is simplest solution but in this case there is some hope. Wound is about 3 days old and is probably caused by caustic chemical (some form of acid probably).

Monday Sept 3, 12:30 pm

Sara has passed away at 11:30 am. This from Jelena: This from Jelena: “We went to vet to check out her wounds and to do necessary surgical cleaning. After she got sedated and vet started cleaning it turned out that wound is heavily infected and under attack of worms. Vet suggested only solution is high amputation and cleaning of the rest minor wounds on her belly. But before he even started performing surgery she was gone, it seems her poor little body was to weak to survive all pre medication necessary for performing surgery. What to say, I’m very sad and depressed, hope there is some better world waiting for her on the other side.”

This is what her wounds looked like at the end. The vet thinks she was burned with bleach or something stronger.

Rest in peace little Sara.
