Saving the dogs of BARK ARK shelter in Prnjavor, Bosnia

Animal Webaction launched a campaign to collect food for the in Prnjavor. There are over 700 dogs in this shelter and food and medical care are only provided by outside donors, even though this is a ‘public shelter’. The Government only covers a one-time fee that barely covers vaccinations. They have an amazing advocate, Bojan Veselica, and he along with supporters have managed to do a lot for the dogs and to try to make the shelter safe, but without food, the situation is impossible. The dogs come from a hard life as strays on the streets of Prnjavor, Samac, Celinac, Modrica and other cities in Northern Bosnia. Others are surrendered by their heartless owners after a life on a chain because they are too old or got sick. All of them have one thing in common: they need to eat to survive.

More than 150 dogs find warm and loving homes each year and Bojan is working on increasing these numbers. But he needs help to keep them safe until then. Animal Webaction is a four day ‘action’ that allows people to either donate money for food, or to simply click the campaign, without donating anything. You have four free clicks per day, With each click you donate 1 gram of food for the dogs. A great many clicks will be needed to reach the goal of over 4000 Kilo in four days and if the goal isn’t raised, the shelter will not get anything. So please help.  If you share this campaign with your friends on Facebook and Instagram, I am sure the campaign will succeed! This would be such a big help for Bojan and the dogs.

So please, starting now, click, share and help!!

How much is a dog’s life worth in Bosnia?

13015547_10153898088828387_4886563814739625237_n

A dog’s life is worth very very little, is the sad truth. If you have been reading these blogs you will know that animal suffering in Bosnia Herzegovina is one of the highest in the world. Take this poor dog, now called Brenda. Bojan Veselica, an IT specialist who lives in Prnjavor spends most of his time trying to help the dogs dumped at the public shelter in his town. Dogs are dumped in the shelter on almost a daily basis and although it is required by law, they are not given any food or veterinary treatment nor are they sterilised. And the suffering is not just in the shelter – but all around.

12993414_10153898097628387_8578790558326871041_nA friend called Bojan on Tuesday April 12th, and showed him pictures of a female dog roaming the yard of a nearby horse stables. He could see that the dog’s leg was ripped off by something or someone –  the bone was sticking out.

I knew I had to go and get her. I found her. Worst thing is she’s got 2 puppies with her. But they are big enough to live on their own (4 months old) and the workers of the stables will feed them. I had to leave them behind,” Bojan told us. (Pictures of the puppies are in the slideshow below)

As you can see from the following video, in spite of what must be incredible pain, Brenda still loves and trusts humans (and who knows how this happened….):

Bojan took Brenda straight to the vet and we are fundraising to cover the costs of surgery and after care, and then somehow we need to find a home for her. If you can help please email us at info@awabosnia.org, but the critical thing right now is to raise funds for the surgery. If you can help you can donate via Paypal to donations@awabosnia.org and please be sure to mark your donation as ‘For Brenda’. Any excess funds will go towards keeping her safe until a home is found and hopefully there will be enough to sterilise her and her two puppies (the cost in Prnjavor to do this is 50 euros per dog, including rabies vaccination). If possible, he will take the puppies to safety, to a ‘pension’ but cost for this are high.

The surgery took place today. The leg was infected and she has to be in vet treatment for at least a week.
operation

12931167_10153898084328387_1496926047757349088_nAlso on Tuesday the 12th, the same day Bojan rescued Brenda, in front of a shopping centre, he saw a tiny thing running around. Running away. Lost and confused. “I have no place for her, but, I also knew I can’t leave her there. She is too small to take care of her own. Too small to go to the public shelter. I took her to my home where I already have 3 dogs. She is safe and sound this evening. I set up a grid cage for her. Tiny female….I will call her Laska.”

laska1What can we do to help Bojan? Can you offer this sweet dog a home? Email us at info@awabosnia.org,

Bojan needs our help for ALL the dogs at Prnjavor shelter. Last month 20 of the dogs there were offered a chance to get out of Bosnia by the Bosnian German organisation SOS Vergessene Pfoten who covered the transport costs and are homing them in Germany. This month they have offered to help another 20 dogs from the shelter. This is truly an unprecedented chance. But… the dogs must be fully vaccinated against infectious diseases, they need to have microchips and passports, and funds need to be raised for this in time for the transport at the end of May. If you can help, please go to the YouCaring fundraiser:

UPDATE 17th April:
Brenda seemed to be doing well after her operation. But then she began to bleed badly, and although the vets did all they could, she died. Bojan found out that Brenda’s accident happened last November, when she got caught in illegal wire traps for deers. And she was stuck for 7 days in the trap. The vet said she had osteomyelitis, an  infection and inflammation of the bone and bone marrow. Her poor bones where rotten. This poor girl suffered so much. Why did no one help her? Or think to call Bojan sooner? We don’t know. All we know is a dog’s life is not worth much, no, not at all.  We are all devastated that she has left us, she had so much support, on Facebook she had so many people rooting for her.  But the bad news doesn’t stop there. Bojan was told that her puppies had been inadvertently eating rat poison around the stables. He went there to rescue them…. only to find out that the male puppy had been accidentally run over. The female puppy was rushed to the vet as she was in a bad way from the poison. She was put immediately on fluids and vitamin K, and finally pulled through. She has been moved to a foster home in Banja Luka. All donators to Brenda have been contacted to find out what they would like to do with their donations. restinpeace

Rescue of dogs from massacre at landfill site, Bosnia

12651168_967546783312216_3930233928752862771_nMany of you read the recent post about the terrible massacre of dogs at the landfill site in Cazin in north west Bosnia Herzegovina. On the 28th rescuers from Sarajevo drove the 300 km to try to rescue the survivors. 17 dogs were rescued, fourteen of these were puppies whose mothers had been killed. The puppies were found wandering around the corpses, desperate for food…  one puppy was badly injured, and one of the adults, both from shot wounds.

12647096_967547379978823_8430212453973404970_nEdina, one of the rescuers, wrote: “Yesterday was a day I will never forget…💔 We got home late yesterday so I didn`t have neither time or strength to write about what happened at the horrible depot in Cazin… First of all, just thinking about where we were going to go and what we were going to see made us feel bad…😞 When we got there we met up with some friends from that place… The entrance to the depot was horrific… There were 10-15 white Roma people there… To be honest I don`t know what to call them... Don`t mean to offend anyone… But when I saw that they threw rocks and garbage from the depot at each other and the way they behaved really scared me…

TRexhen the poor dogs started to run towards us… That made me feel even worse… I didn`t know that there were many dogs left alive there… Our goal was to gather and bring with us all the remaining dogs… According to the information we got, there were supposed to be about 10 puppies and a couple of grown dogs there… But when they started to run towards us, I was shocked… I feared that the people there would attack us and that they would hurt the dogs… I asked them nicely if they could help us rescue the remaining dogs… They laughed and said that they were easy to sell… I got angry and asked them that if they were so easy to sell, why didn`t they sell them? Why were they left here for hunters to kill them? 😡

BabyGirlI was both angry and sad… I told them that I was ready to pay them to help us.. The dogs screamed when they were trying to catch them and they laughed… 😢 It was horrible, but we couldn`t say anything… That was until they lifted one dog by the ears and neck… And then they threw her to the ground… After that chaos broke out… We didn`t have a chance to catch that dog and my heart cries for her… They started to shout all kinds of things towards us and we had to leave… We rescued as many dogs that we could fit into the car…

I`ll never forget this horrible experience… Feel so sorry for the dogs that were left behind… I hope someone can save them…

One of the bigger dogs rescued had survived a bullet… She was rushed to the vet.

12631285_968531123213782_5958951152438642167_nUnfortunately I don`t have any good news to give you about little Hanny who was rescued from the Cazin depot… 😞 While the dogs were running away from the hunters, who were shooting at them, she got shot… She`s badly injured from a shotgun and there are pieces of the shot still left in her body… 😞😢 She`s in a lot of pain and keeps her leg up at the elbow… She cries out if anyone tries to touch her leg… The reason is that this is an old wound and she`s got sepsis…. 😞 Puss is pouring out in big amounts… The little hero has stayed at the clinic and she will stay there for now…

She`s receiving antibiotics, but the vets aren`t able to save her leg… It will have to be urgently amputated… I`m really sad for her, but the most important thing now is to save her life because she`s still in danger… In addition to all of this she has a bad diarrhea… Everything that has happened these last days has really taken my away so much strength from me… It hurts to think about what these poor dogs have been through… While they were killing their friends, sisters and brothers… Hanny and the other survivors tried to run away, but she was still shot… 💔 These hunters are true monsters… Hanny is only a year old and has 8 kilos… 😢 “

tysonAnd this is little Tyson, shot in the hind leg. He is still in the vet clinic. It is a shocking truth that hunters take pleasure in hurting these defenceless dogs who do no harm to anyone, living as they do on the landfill site. And a shocking truth that this goes on all over Bosnia.

Thanks to generous donations many of the puppies have sponsors, and the Harmony Fund has donated towards vet costs. Four puppies have been diagnosed with canine parvovirus which is a devastating illness, but hopefully it has been caught soon enough and not spread to the others. Funds will be needed still, as time goes on and details on how to help are below.

Here is a video of some of the rescued puppies on the way to safety…

And another video when they reached safety…

If you wish to help with ongoing costs of the rescued animals please send 12660478_10205138129233591_1392837363_ndonations via Paypal to donations@awabosnia.org but be sure to mark your donation as ‘Cazin dogs’.

Any saved dogs will stay in Sarajevo until homes are found for them in the UK or Europe. These homes will be thoroughly checked.

Over 250 dogs and cats have been homed with the help of AWABosnia and Help for Furries. If you think you can help with offering a home please send an email to info@awabosnia.org. Also please do share this post far and wide, thank you!

Slaughter of stray dogs at landfill site, Bosnia

12553008_960242650729826_6676578519293042910_nA group of dogs lived in a landfill site in Cazin in north west Bosnia Herzegovina, about  300 km from Sarajevo. Local hunters entered the area yesterday and slaughtered most of the dogs: pregnant dogs, mothers, puppies, all shot and left in piles of trash. The few survivors who are mainly puppies are now sleeping next to their dead mothers and siblings.

This is not the first time this has happened in this particular landfill site  – we made a post about a similar slaughter one year ago, almost to the date. As noted there: “In Bosnia and Herzegovina torture and killing animals is a common occurrence. In adults the offence is punishable by fine or imprisonment, however the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of such crimes very rarely occur, but the activists will not cease from attempting to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

1914917_960243150729776_1806615317131243708_nThere are approximately 10 puppies and one or two adults still in the area and Miska Oksanen with the assistance of Edina Pasic of Andjeo Sarajevo is trying to save as many of the survivors as possible before the hunters decide to come back to finish their work.

The person who shared the information told us that the hunters went to a pub to have a good time after slaughtering these poor strays who bothered no one.

12573675_960243674063057_5237021849110560968_nMiska and Edina are working hard to raise funds for the rescue mission. If you wish to help help please send donations via Paypal to donations@awabosnia.org but be sure to mark your donation as ‘Cazin dogs’.

Any saved dogs will be brought to Sarajevo where they will stay until long term homes are found for them in the UK or Europe.

Puppy Flung off Bridge in Sarajevo, Bosnia

12092513_1720431424857520_1562241327_nThis is Precious. Two days ago, her rescuer, Fahrudin Caki Bravo, told us:

12112346_1721474034753259_1876745766829301075_nThis innocent soul is only 4 months old, but she has already had a horrible destiny so far… Some monster from Sarajevo threw her of a bridge, 7-8 meters high. She weighs only 5 kilos… The police was informed as this action was witnessed but the monster ran off and nobody could find him or this baby. Finally a lady found the puppy crawling down the street, in the middle of the pouring rain… Many people just walked by her while she was dragging the back of her body down the wet concrete. She was brought to the vet and received first aid and they also did an X-ray… She has a complicated back injury… Please help me save her. Her debt at the moment is 105e for boarding and 30e for the X-ray. She will also need Rimadil and diapers…. I`m so disgusted by all this that I don`t know what to write anymore….

The bridge….

12072702_1720335641533765_6105211529566076252_nAnd the little soul, at the vets…

The vet in Sarajevo told Caki that she needs an MRI which is not available in Bosnia. He drove her to Split, where she received a full examination.

In Caki’s car, on the way to getting help….

The kind vet refused to charge, saying this was her contribution to the dogs of Sarajevo. However, the sad news is that Precious has a spinal injury which needs immediate operation, which can be done in Zagreb. Caki is driving her to Zagreb, and she’ll be operated on tomorrow. The cost for the operation will be around 700 or 800 euros.

If you can help, we have set up a YouCaring:
Screen Shot 2015-10-13 at 17.45.02Or you can make a donation directly via Paypal to: donations@awabosnia.org and mark for ‘Precious’.

10310114_679331748768764_2399252418801957405_nCaki was one of the people helping the most in the terrible floods of 2014, spending his days saving lives. When the dog killers descended on Sarajevo to ‘clean the streets’ in anticipation of the Popes visit he spent hours trying to find his local furry friends. The strays he had loved, fed and cared for over months or years, many lives were lost but he was there to coax the lucky ones out from their hiding places.

He has 39 rescues in pension and struggles terribly to raise the funds necessary to keep them safe off the streets and away from the dog catchers. Precious’s additional costs will break him.  We are hoping people will step up and help – every amount makes a difference, no matter how small. Every euro makes a difference.

Brutal Murder of Dogs in Zenica, Bosnia

10712853_10153102175931634_4326862872138866452_nOn the 12th of July, volunteers of the Association for Saving and Protecting Animals “SAPA Zenica”, after receiving allegations from citizens, organized a search and discovered the bodies of 6 dogs in the area of Zenica called Kamenolom, some 6km from the city center. Four bodies were found on one spot, thrown in the river banks, and two bodies some 100m upstream, in a very hard to reach area. allegedly more dogs are missing and more bodies were seen but the unknown perpetrators moved the corpses. Half of the dogs had ear tags (showing they had been sterilised), and volunteers easily identified and recognized the dogs, including some dogs who had no ear tags.

1496444_10153102175616634_8780473027073811220_o

All the dogs had visible trauma inflicted on them by human hands, numerous wounds. It is suspected they were hit repeatedly until dead. Blood traces were visible on the head, body, coming from the ears and the mouth. All the dogs were from the city center. The were clearly caught and killed and then transported into this river bank area to be discarded. On the location where two bodies were found, a dog collar was hanging on a tree above.

11745695_10153102175786634_6796580947610803229_nSAPA Zenica immediately informed the local media, the Municipal authorities, the Cantonal Veterinary Inspection, and the Police, and they will file charges to the Prosecutor’s office, on the basis that several criminal acts have been committed.

SAPA volunteers had a sterilization weekend that week, 11-12 July, in another action to help the wider community by ensuring dogs are sterilized, vaccinated, ear tagged, and that the rise of population is prevented. To discover this in the midst of the sterilization campaign was agonizing, the volunteers having known these dogs for years.

11709711_10153102175646634_5065900607585220166_nThe next day, citizens reported more missing dogs, especially in one part of Zenica, and also found a witness who, on the 12 July around 00:30h in one part of Zenica  prevented more dogs from being killed. They spotted a white van, no number plates, and two males in the van, one with a gun, stepping out and calling dogs. This responsible citizen prevented them from killing and catching dogs in that street but didn’t call the police immediately. He gave a description and chronology of this incident which SAPA Zenica also reported to police.

After the media reported these atrocities, shocking public comments were also reported to police, especially on Facebook from the “Stop Ugriz” (Stop dog bites) group which is known for spreading hatred, encouraging violence, and inciting others to perpetrate killings of dogs.

11249021_10153102175861634_7631148398439341487_nFighting an “invisible“ enemy is most difficult, as it is suspected that a group of people is organized and hired to privately “deal” with the “issue” in this cruel manner.

SAPA Volunteers reported about this on their FB page, informed all citizens publicly and alerted all people who feed animals to be on watch, on alert and on guard and to prevent atrocities and to call the police.

11755693_10153102175456634_2578492508806360148_nWe need to stop this and make police and authorities identify perpetrators instead of turning a blind eye. SAPA Zenica and our dogs need your help.

Please help SAPA Zenica, a registered NGO, to investigate this atrocity and to prevent others. Extermination of dogs at Breza Coal Mine, Bosnia

11272225_10205533802498050_372230442_nBy Dalida Kozlic, lawyer and activist in BiH

The management of Coal Mine Breza, Bosnia Herzegovina, ordered and implemented a mass extermination of stray dogs last week.

More than 25 stray dogs, which had lived in the area, were killed during the past weekend. Employees of the mine, which is owned by the Public company Elektroprivreda, Bosnia’s second-largest power utility, noticed that dozens of stray dogs were missing in the area of the coal mine. After many conversations with employees, it has been found that more than 25 stray dogs were killed in the area of the coal mine on the 17th of May.

According to the statement of witnesses, the management of the coal mine, which is led by a director who is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), ordered members of the hunting organisation from Breza to kill all strays in the area of the mine. Two years ago the SDP party proposed amendments to the Act on Protection and Welfare of Animals, amendments which would have allowed the killing of healthy, stray animals.

Two notorious hunters, who have been reported dozens of times committing criminal offences of torturing and killing animals, shot the stray dogs on the 17th May. The criminal report against the hunters and the management of the coal mine was filed in the police station Breza yesterday. Also, the Prosecutor’s office of Canton Zenica – Doboj was informed about these offenders.

Medo is a dog from the coal mine. He was saved from the coal mine just a week before the mass killing. Medo was hit by car in front of the coal mine and employees had been feeding him. Employees asked many people to help the dog but no one wanted to provide veterinary care for him including bosses and management of the coal mine. Medo is now safe and he is recovering from injuries, but the dog has not been able to walk since then and all his friends are gone since no one was aware of the dire acts being planned for the stray dogs in the area.

Note: Dalida Kozlic had posted on her Facebook page the following just two weeks ago:

medo2My dad received a phone call from employees of coal mine in Breza today. They told him that one dog had been hit by car in front of coal mine on Monday. Employees of coal mine have been feeding him, but the dog couldn’t walk since then. Also, they have asked many people to help the dog but no one has wanted to provide a veterinary care for him including bosses and management of the coal mine. My dad, our vet and I went to coal mine had gone to goal mine and found the dog that was in bushes. We took him to the veterinary station immediately. The dog was exhausted and dehydrated. Also, we found a wire near his neck. The vet says that his skin and hips aren’t injured, but his right last paw is badly injured as well as joints of the left paw, because of those injuries he is unable to walk. The dog will be x rayed next week. He was treated by the vet with analgesics, vitamins, antibiotics and many other medications. After treatment had finished, we took him to the vet’s pension. I will need your help to pay medications and treatments for this wonderful gentle giant. We named him Medo (Bear; in English).”

Dalida needs our help. Not just for Medo and his veterinary costs, but for 85 rescued dogs and 8 rescued cats. Without Dalida these animals would be starving or dead. Without Dalida, the situation for all strays in the country would be even more dire than it is. She desperately needs support to pay for her rescues’ pension costs, medical costs and food. Mass killing of stray dogs in Banovici, Bosnia

11180174_10205377337066512_1382365161_nA number of stray dogs have been killed in Banovici during the past few days. Mass slaughter of dogs started when two unknown persons were shooting dogs from their car. Citizens of Banovici have found corpses of dead dogs in many parts of the town including streets in the centre of Banovici. After this illegal and brutal massacre had started, many citizens of Banovici started saving of dogs from Banovici. 11208958_10205377336066487_1996665112_n

An improvised shelter was built on private property near Banovici: over 100 dogs have been placed in an improvised shelter and food, blankets and medications are needed for saved animals. It is extraordinary that people have organised such wonderful and humane action in order to save stray dogs from brutal killers.

Killing of stray dogs was reported to local police. Also, a criminal report will be filled to Prosecutor’s office against unknown persons because they have committed a criminal offence of torturing and killing of animals.

Stopping the Suffering: you CAN help the dogs of Prnjavor Shelter!

11025642_10152992466793387_8900558840802497785_n
Until end of day Friday, 17th April, ANY donation you make towards sterilising the dogs of Prnjavor shelter will be DOUBLED, thanks to The Harmony Fund who will match all donations! Go HERE to donate.

10484142_10153007842443387_1982794010553137039_oFor some time now AWABosnia has run a fundraiser for sterilising the dogs of Prnjavor shelter, Bosnia Herzegovina. This is possible due to the work of Bojan Veselica, an independent rescuer who does everything he can to see that the dogs in this public shelter are cared for. Unfortunately public funds do not cover sterilisation, and this is a real problem as there is no way to separate male and female dogs.

Bojan contacted us and we started fundraising last year,
10474535_10153008600963387_5604793361443963646_nand managed to raise enough to sterilise 12 dogs by March 2015. The original goal was to cover the costs for 20 dogs, and this would include rabies vaccinations and parasites.

However, there are many dogs needing sterilisation and Bojan recently wrote: “Situation is getting from bad to worse each day at Prnjavor public shelter. Its spring time and people surrender their dogs every day now. In the last 20 days there is 10 new dogs. Its getting pretty crowded inside. I don’t see some happy future for this. I am trying my best but I can’t stop people from 11080587_10153007842363387_7230316890892802054_odumping their dogs. I can try and do as much sterilisations as possible but we need the funds. Oh I am getting really tired from this.”

Yesterday we emailed the The Harmony Fund to see if they could help and they immediately wrote back: “We will match all donations that come in from now until end of day Friday 17th April (up to 700 Euros).

This is an incredible offer, so we really want to see if we can generate 700 euros of donations in the next day and a half. This will mean 1400 euros for Prnjavor, which means TWENTY EIGHT dogs can be sterilised! Please donate via our YouCaringScreen Shot 2015-04-15 at 22.08.43If you wish to make a direct donation via PayPal, you can do so to the PayPal account: donations@awabosnia.org – please mark your donation as ‘Prnjavor‘

Dog chained her whole life, living in horrific conditions – FREED!

10952564_10205601380531181_1306296589823638500_nA few days ago Mia Ožegović made a post on Facebook about a dog her friend had discovered living in the yard of a house in the city centre of Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina. The dog was chained by a 1 metre rusted chain and living in horrific squalor. It was clear the chain never came off… and most likely the poor dog lived on the end of it 24 hours a day, day in, day out for all of her young life. She’s a purebred Belgian Shepherd (malinois) female, probably about 2 years old.

Mia wrote: “Around her “doggie house” you can see mud, stale bread ….and more mud and faeces and junk of all kind ….
10945009_10205601379011143_6532183951189420413_n
As this is Bosnia, Mia and her rescuer friends knew that calling the authorities would have no effect. They tried for two nights to release the dog, but their pliers were poor and couldn’t cut any part of the chain which was wrapped around a wooden post (used to conduct electricity to households in that area), so tight and thick that they could not dismantle it nor cut it, and the chain itself was wrapped tightly around the dog’s neck twice and had a padlock which held it in place.
10306267_10205601380291175_2817966040208933306_nThey considered offering to buy the dog from her “owners” (a Roma family) but from other experiences with similar situations, they knew this would cost an enormous amount of money, money that would be needed to keep the dog in safety and give her proper veterinary care and good food and help her find a new family that would actually take care of her and give her the love she deserves….10897005_10205601379571157_765488205694649286_n
10945660_10205633724539761_4478033296260339148_nLast night Mia and her friends bought second-hand bolt cutters and went again after midnight, and this time they succeeded ! The cutters snapped through the chain. The dog is free!

Mia named this beautiful dog Sheba. Sheba is now in a pension (kennels) where she will get premium food, indoor stay, regular walks and a clean warm bed at night.

Mia says, “She is hyperactive, funny, great, loving and so far we haven’t noticed any major issues with her. She smells a LOT and has fleas.” She’ll be given a bath and a proper vet check.

****Funds are needed to pay the pension (105 EU/ 120 USD per month) and also for veterinary checks and vaccinations. If you can help, please donate via Paypal to: ozegovichmia@gmail.com and mark for ‘SHEBA’*****
