Flood Rescues from Bosnia – an update on three beautiful cats

croppedSo many people donated generously to assist in the animal rescue efforts during the terrible flooding in BiH in May. Here is an update on three cats that were rescued, and then kept safe by Angel’s Rest of Tuzla thanks to your donations.

10310114_679331748768764_2399252418801957405_nAll three were rescued from Bosanski Šamac which was almost completely destroyed by the floods. As one of the rescuers said when they went in there: “It’s really hard to find words to describe all the horror we saw there, even photos are not the best indicators. That smell of death and despair I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Two of the cats were found wandering through muddy streets, disoriented, hungry, thirsty and scared, and third cat had been surviving for more than a week on the roof of a house. Rescuers had to reach her by boat –  paddling through what once were streets, playgrounds and gardens.

Although this cat was supposed to be wild, the moment she saw the rescuers approaching, she “..literally wanted to jump into our boat.”

10372792_679332048768734_6496390310925054643_nAll three cats appeared to be pregnant, but it was soon clear that one of them who they named Katarina, was very ill.

A veterinary examination indicated she had a severe inflammation of the urinary tract, and was not pregnant.  After days of aggressive therapy, Katarina showed no improvement.

10544404_698129890222283_4339731686591156722_nAn ultrasound was unclear, so the vet suggested surgery to confirm if there were adhesions in her inner organs. Also, there were some cancerous changes on her nose and ears, but it was decided it was best to leave these alone. The operation showed that her uterus had thickened and had serious calcification, so it was removed. But her health continued to be so fragile. In the end, with lots of consulting with several vets, the final diagnosis is cancer, which has spread everywhere.

Katarina is in Angel’s Rest in Tuzla, under the very best of care from her rescuers.  “I just want to give her peace in her last, hopefully, months on this world. She still wants to be here and I will respect her decision to leave, once she feels like she’s ready to go.

10444789_685680161467256_7562923207171600245_nThe silver tabby kitty rescued, named Sophie by her foster mum, also had a vet check  shortly after rescue. It was found she was also not pregnant, but heavily infested by worms, for which she was treated and she is now doing really well, also at Angel’s Rest.

Sophie is young lady (she’s under a year of age) and she’s ready for adoption.  Gentle, sweet and very playful.”

The third cat, Steffi, was confirmed very pregnant and gave to 4 beautiful kittens on the fifth of June.
10352579_683358608366078_8647748015950086372_nVery sadly, just a few nights ago one of Steffi’s babies fell out of the window and died, a terrible accident as there was netting on the window, but somehow one of the cats managed to rip an opening. Everyone is absolutely devastated.

R.I.P. little white butterfly.

The other kittens and Steffi are doing really well, the kittens are 7 weeks old and soon they will need homes.

A huge thank you to the rescuers, to the fosters who have taken such good care of these beautiful cats and of course to everyone who donated to the flood fundraiser. If it weren’t for you, these lovely cats would not have survived.

10402468_698129806888958_2967826431410199988_nAmra from Angel’s Rest says: “It became very hard to recall memories of the time when all of them were found, now when they all became “house” cats. It’s so good to see them have a normal life after that hell they lived before. When we rescued them, we thought they are all pregnant, but ended up that Katarina is just too sick and Sophie was full of worms. Only Steffi came to safety with offspring. Wish this horrible accident with her baby didn’t happen. But, in her memory I will do anything to find great homes for her siblings and mum.

If you think you can adopt one of these cats, please contact Dutch Lansky Schultz Meyer on Facebook or contact us here at info@awabosnia.org and we will forward on the email.

Angel’s Rest Facebook group is here. They and their associated group, Marianne’s Dog Food Bank, do extraordinary work for the strays of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Amongst all the horror happening in Bosnia Herzegovina, we need to remember the good. This year our group, AWAB (Animal Welfare Advocates for Bosnia Herzegovina), with assistance from other animal welfare organisations and independent animal activists have helped nearly 30 dogs find forever homes outside of BiH. This is a post about some of their stories….

Loppy and Billy were homed early this year, two dogs living on the streets, and fallen in love with when their photographs were seen here on this blog and on Facebook. Now in their forever homes in the UK.
loppy3Loppy was a sad street dog, found by rescuer Ismir Musić. You can read some of his story here. He’s now a much loved member of the Prestwich family in Essex…
1078310_581605038549047_520490967_nBilly first appeared on this blog in November last year, here. He was one of many strays being fed by activists Jelena Paunovic and others. This dog was so desperate to get back in their car….but had to be left behind as there was no money to put him in pension…

cardogmainBut we were soon contacted by Julie, who had read his story and wanted to adopt him! Activists managed to find him again, and took him off the streets into pension for him to be prepared for travel to the UK. Here he is now, looking so handsome!

552809_333663790088761_696760423_n

And then there is the incredible story of Ado, a puppy run over and left to die and now living happily ever after in Slovenia. Ado… when first found:
6718_581174491894330_1690750509_nAnd many months later, with his new mom!

941658_371071139659397_334537291_nBy June 2013, we had found homes for 14 rescues and arranged transport for them with the wonderful Chris Marshall of Alstrays. You can see some of them here in our Success Stories. Perhaps the most poignant is the story of Grace, rescued from horror shelter Hreša, near Sarajevo. She first appeared in this blog here. She was completely traumatised and emaciated. She became ‘the face’ of AWAB, with this moving photograph of her being held by Mia Ožegović, one of the rescuers in Sarajevo:
536777_4939447526793_782718292_nGrace was put into pension and then Mette in Norway fell in love with her… and she’s now a very happy, healthy and much loved dog living in Norway.

gracebeforeafter

Another very touching adoption was Marley, rescued by Arijana Ari and Jelena Paunović – here is the first post about him, and then more here.. and he was one of the few survivors of the canine parvovirus crisis. Another very timid dog, who we feared would never become socialised. But we found him an excellent foster home in East Sussex, where he was so loved they couldn’t part with him so now he is permanently homed with the family, very happy and becoming less timid by the day!

beforeafter3

The adoption of all these dogs was a huge undertaking, successful only because of the help and assistance of many people including Vlatka Toukalek and her group, Deed for Dogs, and, of course, the rescuers in Sarajevo.

This winter we assisted with the homing of 12 more dogs and one cat… three dogs were are homed in the USA (one in Los Angeles!), four dogs in the UK, one dog in Germany and four dogs and Boxer the cat in Finland. Four dogs were actually picked up by Miska Oksanen and her step-father and driven to Finland (nearly 3000 kilometres each way!)…Most of these animals were rescued by the Sarajevo animal rescue charity Andjeo Sarajevo with help from independent rescuers.

555081_585185014881730_42810109_nThe organisation and preparation of all these adoptions takes a monumental effort by numerous people: volunteers outside of BiH for AWAB, assistance from other rescue groups to home check and help with travel arrangements; rescuers and drivers from BiH, and donations from all over the world. It’s not possible to express our thanks enough for all this support, but if you look at the photographs of the dogs and cats in their new homes I hope you can see what a huge difference you have made.

Three of the dogs homed this winter, Bella, Noa and Felix, are disabled….All were rescued by Andjeo SarajevoBella was found wandering the streets of Sarajevo, she had a missing paw. Here she is, on the streets…

And here she is making friends at the stopover in Munich before her flight to the USA. Even though she could not had an easy time as a stray, she was always a friendly, happy dog.

1450851_10153527975705113_960657154_n

And here she is in her new forever home in Los Angeles…1486908_10201641428452180_716339797_n

Noa was found with a horrific injury to her hind leg, and had to have it amputated. She remained very timid and scared, and didn’t like being in kennels. You can in the photographs below his serious  wound, and how timid and scared this poor dog was…
1185149_546058178794414_351389691_n1176211_546057792127786_290667523_n1176214_546680598732172_1845224043_n

And then…  a lovely couple who live in Buffalo, New York, fell in love with Noa. She is settling in very well.

Noa, being nervously admired in the airport:

And the latest photograph, look how much more confident and happy she looks!
1496018_1405128386396117_641013255_o Felix is another miracle story. He was found in a field, unable to walk properly, his hind quarters were not functioning properly and he was in terrible pain. He had to be sent to Croatia for extended surgery to save both hind legs. It is likely he was in a car accident, or deliberately wounded.

He spent a long time in the veterinary surgery and although the operation was deemed successful, he seemed to be getting aggressive and thin. But with the support from animal activists we placed him in a very good foster home where he was soon much happier. A forever home was found for him in Germany where he is doing so extraordinarily well it’s hard to believe it’s the same dog!

1499518_569034543165047_1142449817_nFour of the dogs we homed this winter were rescued from Foča, one of the ‘horror’ shelters of BiH, a place that when first visited seemed comparatively alright. But a second visit proved everyone wrong: the place was a front, set up to prevent inspection while strays were killed elsewhere.

Another of the dogs homed in Finland by Miska Oksanen, Bijelko, was found in Sarajevo wandering the streets with a broken lower jaw and an infected wound on his stomach, a bite wound from another dog. Asking around Andjeo Sarajevo found out that the poor dog was attacked by a group of people, who broke his jaw with a lead pipe and he was suffering in this condition for seven days, not being able to feed or defend himself.

Mica was found in Gorazde ‘shelter’ with 15 other dogs in one small cage.
The other dogs did not allow her to eat (the dry bread they had to live on) and she was terrified. Activist Jelena Paunović rescued her and took her into foster care.

Mica is now is very happy and much loved in her new home in England…

1489297_10151774304341080_2076700137_n

And Asti.  Asti was found in a severe stage of scabies disease. Almir Kuduz of King Pension in Sarajevo took her on and treated her. However, sadly, the girl who brought her in was unable to do more and could not cover the debt of Asti’s board.

But with Almir’s help she recovered, turning into a beauty with a personality to match.

1383055_676877845655828_1337790000_n

Almir contacted AWAB to see if we could help and thanks to generous donations and to the quick offer of an extraordinary home in Scotland, her life has changed forever…
Here she is with her new mom…

asti And not to forget our feline lovelies…

boxer

Boxer had a very sad tale: he was one of the strays rescued and taken care of by a Jela, an elderly woman in Sarajevo who takes care of many abandoned and stray cats.  Boxer was one of the fattest cat in the Jela house, but someone attacked him – probably with a stick or pole, and broke his teeth. He only had two teeth left and became very thin. With donations special food was bought and he began to put on weight, and then Miska found a wonderful home for him in Finland where he lives very happily. His favourite spot is in the sauna!

Screen Shot 2013-12-31 at 16.51.40There are many dogs and cats in Bosnia-Herzegovina still needing forever homes. If you think you can offer a home, please contact us. Some of the dogs are here, and we have a new Facebook group where we are slowly compiling photographs and information about strays we are helping keep off the streets in pension and foster homes, dogs and cats desperately needing forever homes. Please visit the group, and see if there is a special someone for you to fall in love with…AWAB Dogs and Cats For Adoption
