Until end of day Friday, 17th April, ANY donation you make towards sterilising the dogs of Prnjavor shelter will be DOUBLED, thanks to The Harmony Fund who will match all donations! Go HERE to donate.

10484142_10153007842443387_1982794010553137039_oFor some time now AWABosnia has run a fundraiser for sterilising the dogs of Prnjavor shelter, Bosnia Herzegovina. This is possible due to the work of Bojan Veselica, an independent rescuer who does everything he can to see that the dogs in this public shelter are cared for. Unfortunately public funds do not cover sterilisation, and this is a real problem as there is no way to separate male and female dogs.

Bojan contacted us and we started fundraising last year,
10474535_10153008600963387_5604793361443963646_nand managed to raise enough to sterilise 12 dogs by March 2015. The original goal was to cover the costs for 20 dogs, and this would include rabies vaccinations and parasites.

However, there are many dogs needing sterilisation and Bojan recently wrote: “Situation is getting from bad to worse each day at Prnjavor public shelter. Its spring time and people surrender their dogs every day now. In the last 20 days there is 10 new dogs. Its getting pretty crowded inside. I don’t see some happy future for this. I am trying my best but I can’t stop people from 11080587_10153007842363387_7230316890892802054_odumping their dogs. I can try and do as much sterilisations as possible but we need the funds. Oh I am getting really tired from this.”

Yesterday we emailed the The Harmony Fund to see if they could help and they immediately wrote back: “We will match all donations that come in from now until end of day Friday 17th April (up to 700 Euros).

This is an incredible offer, so we really want to see if we can generate 700 euros of donations in the next day and a half. This will mean 1400 euros for Prnjavor, which means TWENTY EIGHT dogs can be sterilised! Beba’s Friends Spay Project for AWABosnia

bannerfinal

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of Paul Connolly’s Wolfspeak Charity Fundraiser, AWABosnia is now able to launch its new focus on spaying and neutering with a spay project for Anela Elkazevic, who lives in Travnic. Anela takes care of many of the street dogs in her area. Please join our Facebook event for this project!
anelaThis project is in honour of Beba, one of the dogs she’s taken care of…. here she is: bebaBeba’s mother was used as a “puppy factory” and then thrown out as if she were a piece of garbage, just as she was giving birth to yet more puppies. This is how Anela found her. One of the puppies was stuck inside, and Anela managed to pull this puppy out and save her life. She named her Beba.

beba3Beba has grown into a lovable gentle giant and is, of course, spayed. But Beba’s story did not end there … after Anela had her spayed, Beba was hit by a car and all her legs were broken. Anela dropped everything to take care of her, and although the vet insisted Beba should be put to sleep, Anela did not agree and spent more than three months nursing Beba back to health. Here is a video of Beba during her healing process…

But as if this wasn’t enough trauma for one dog, a man kidnapped Beba and raped her. Anela did what she could for the bleeding and physical trauma, and Beba healed well. But it took a long time for her to trust people. She would only let Anela and her friend come close and stroke her. Happily, Beba is doing much better now. She is still gentle and loving in spite of the terrible suffering she has been through.

10389510_10203573652609542_1980834774177953018_nAnela currently has a critical situation with the strays she feeds in her area. There are 10 female dogs and two are already pregnant, so AWABosnia is funding the spaying for the remaining 8 female dogs. These strays are treated very brutally, with people beating them and killing them. Spaying these female dogs means preventing suffering for dozens of new puppies.

10457822_10203703916626061_4065219565005845150_nAWABosnia believes that one of the only effective and humane methods of stopping the suffering experienced by stray dogs and cats in Bosnia Herzegovina is through sterilisation programmes to prevent even more unwanted animals being born and suffering death by starvation, injury and disease, or by inhumane “culling” methods.

Sterilisation costs vary from about 50 to 150 euros per dog, depending on the vet, the after-care required, and whether the animal is male or female. Every 50 euros means preventing hundreds of puppies being born into a life of horror, hardship, neglect and violence. Let’s all get together and PREVENT this from happening!
