Bosnia: Desperate situation in the state owned shelter for dogs in Doboj

From Journalists for Animals blog:
August 28 2014:

Animal rights activists visited yesterday the state owned dog shelter located within the Sport and recreational center Preslica”” which is located 12 km away from Doboj. The situation is more than scary just like it was in the previous years – reported the activists.

“The stories circulate in Doboj that there are no dogs to be found in Preslica and that the shelter has been closed for a long time” – one woman said to us. We went to check what that is all about.

GEDSC DIGITAL CAMERAIt was raining. There was a zoo once, not far from the dog pound, which was now grown over by grass. In the distance, you could see the gate and hear the dogs barking.

We got out of the car. The dogs were barking. First thing we saw are the open doors on cages for dogs that were overcrowded till yesterday. We saw a dog in the small cage at the very entrance. It was barking and it seemed like with its barking, the dog was begging us to save it from this hell. Its cage was full of feces mixed with dry dog food. As it was raining, this food, obviously left by some good soul so it doesn’t starve, was slowly turning into a red stain….

Beba’s Friends Spay Project for AWABosnia

bannerfinal

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of Paul Connolly’s Wolfspeak Charity Fundraiser, AWABosnia is now able to launch its new focus on spaying and neutering with a spay project for Anela Elkazevic, who lives in Travnic. Anela takes care of many of the street dogs in her area. Please join our Facebook event for this project!
anelaThis project is in honour of Beba, one of the dogs she’s taken care of…. here she is: bebaBeba’s mother was used as a “puppy factory” and then thrown out as if she were a piece of garbage, just as she was giving birth to yet more puppies. This is how Anela found her. One of the puppies was stuck inside, and Anela managed to pull this puppy out and save her life. She named her Beba.

beba3Beba has grown into a lovable gentle giant and is, of course, spayed. But Beba’s story did not end there … after Anela had her spayed, Beba was hit by a car and all her legs were broken. Anela dropped everything to take care of her, and although the vet insisted Beba should be put to sleep, Anela did not agree and spent more than three months nursing Beba back to health. Here is a video of Beba during her healing process…

But as if this wasn’t enough trauma for one dog, a man kidnapped Beba and raped her. Anela did what she could for the bleeding and physical trauma, and Beba healed well. But it took a long time for her to trust people. She would only let Anela and her friend come close and stroke her. Happily, Beba is doing much better now. She is still gentle and loving in spite of the terrible suffering she has been through.

10389510_10203573652609542_1980834774177953018_nAnela currently has a critical situation with the strays she feeds in her area. There are 10 female dogs and two are already pregnant, so AWABosnia is funding the spaying for the remaining 8 female dogs. These strays are treated very brutally, with people beating them and killing them. Spaying these female dogs means preventing suffering for dozens of new puppies.

10457822_10203703916626061_4065219565005845150_nAWABosnia believes that one of the only effective and humane methods of stopping the suffering experienced by stray dogs and cats in Bosnia Herzegovina is through sterilisation programmes to prevent even more unwanted animals being born and suffering death by starvation, injury and disease, or by inhumane “culling” methods.

Sterilisation costs vary from about 50 to 150 euros per dog, depending on the vet, the after-care required, and whether the animal is male or female. Every 50 euros means preventing hundreds of puppies being born into a life of horror, hardship, neglect and violence. Let’s all get together and PREVENT this from happening!

Rotweiller with breast tumour left to die…

10603287_10203574290471474_7607309747579991920_n

Another awful case of animal abuse and neglect in Bosnia Herzegovina. Dalida Kozlic saved this female rottweiler in Visoko today. The poor dog was wading in a river to try and cool herself, most likely to relieve the pain of the huge tumour hanging from her.

10599595_10203574287231393_5609431378958538596_nWhile she was standing in the water, Dalida called out to her, the dog came over and Dalida was able to put a collar on and put the dog into her car.

This dog has a breast tumour, fleas all over and many wounds on her body. Her health condition is very, very poor. Dalida brought her to a vet and the dog was treated for internal and external parasites. As soon as she gets stronger, she will be operated on. She will be placed in the vet’s pension.

10350631_10203574302431773_2734972148883336770_nCosts of the operation will be 100 Euros. Costs of the pension will be 60 Euros per month. Costs of medications will be huge, because antibiotics, analgesics, vitamins and infusion solutions are to be administrated every day in order to prevent infections and to improve her health condition.

Please look through more shocking photos in the slideshow below.

If you can help Dalida send donations by Paypal to eldar.kozlic1@gmail.com –
Mark for “Roty” and please click confirm receipt after making your donation, or make your donation to AWAB in the instructions at the bottom of the page, but make sure you mark the donation for ‘Roty’.

10628435_10203574298711680_973308657488021925_nAlso know that Dalida has a number of other rescues in her care and needs as much support as possible to keep them safe until she finds forever homes for them.

Dalida is one of many rescuers in Bosnia Herzegovina who are also active advocates for all strays and animals in the country. She’s a lawyer and has done a number of investigations into animal abuse and is also instrumental in the fact that BiH has very good animal welfare laws (sadly, they are not implemented). Her blog is here http://protectionofanimals.wordpress.com.

10577102_10203574305031838_7586275720764423216_nIt’s very common for ill or elderly dogs or cats to be abandoned. As one BiH rescuer says: “I can already imagine this dog was was abandoned because of the tumour because the owners were afraid that it was something contagious or even worse because they did not want to provide medical treatment for her but most probably it was a combined scenario, that heartless, cruel and above all provincial way of thinking” “It’s cheaper and easier to get another dog.”

Rescuing the Rescuer

Jelena Paunović, activist, rescuer and journalist in Sarajevo needs our help. Please read about her here. Jelena is one of the main reasons anyone outside of Bosnia Herzegovina knows about the dire situation for strays. During last year’s attempt to change the BiH animal welfare laws she was fully engaged with helping organise demonstrations against these changes.

She has investigated the ‘horror shelters’ and shared the story, often putting her own life in danger.

If you have read in this blog the appalling situations in the so-called dog shelters, and in particular with the dog ‘shelter’ in Hresa, it is primarily due to Jelena’s investigative work. No one will ever forget the photograph of the starving dog, taken at the shelter.

xxx But the fact remains that for an intelligent, educated, dedicated young woman in Bosnia, someone who fights a cause – animal welfare  – that the government shows no sign of supporting, a cause that the general populace is against, the options are few, and she is now at her wits end how to survive.

Jelena has had no paid work for well over a year now, but still has managed to continue her advocacy work. She has been trying to find a job in all possible ways but… in Bosnia 60% of young people are unemployed. She is just one more of them (please read her blog, “Fuck this Country“).

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 15.58.32Jelena can’t go on like this. She has one option, to sell her small, but now utterly ruined apartment. It’s ruined because of all the rescues she’s fostered, and because she’s had no income to fix things.

To put the apartment on the market, she has been forced to put into pension (kennels) the cats she rescued over the past eight years and has been fostering, but she has no income to pay the cost of this pension, but also no choice to do this. She is in a terrible situation because of this. She has no possibility of a bank loan, no one in her family who can help and all her friends are in a similar situation: struggling to survive while also struggling to save the animals.
Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 15.58.23
Jelena says: “There are seven cats in total. Other than these, I also have three dogs living in my apartment who were also rescued off the streets. This means that in my devastated apartment I have a total of 10 animals. I have tried to find homes for them, but I failed. For the past four years my apartment has had no heating system and the windows are so old they can no longer hold the glass. I have nylon on my windows instead of glass. Tens of stray dogs went through my flat. When I add it all up, it was nice to save them all, but I have destroyed my life. Now I am trying to sell the apartment in which I can no longer live. All I ask is your help to gather the money to keep the cats in the pension until I can sell my apartment. When people see so many animals, trust me, they vomit, and they bring the price down, and this apartment is the only material thing I own. For the first time I am begging you for help, because I will go insane!

Many of the dogs you’ve seen on these blogs that were rescued and eventually found homes for outside of BiH were fostered by Jelena in this apartment.  Surely we can thank her for all the fine work she’s done by helping fund the cats until she can sell her apartment?

Screen Shot 2014-08-02 at 16.01.31The cost to keep the cats in pension is 3 euros per day per cat, about 530 euros per month. She’s managed to raise some of this, but for this month alone still needs at least 250 euros. Can we raise this and one month in addition so she can focus on selling the apartment and not worry every moment about how she will pay this debt?

And if you think you can offer a home to one of these lovely cats, please email her directly.

If you can help with the pension debt, you can donate directly to Jelena via PayPal to journalistsforanimals@gmail.com – mark ‘for cat debt’ – or if you prefer, via AWABosnia’s Paypal: donations@awabosnia.org, please mark ‘for Jelena’s cat pension debt’. Thank you! Any amount will help, perhaps you can offer to pay one day for one cat (3 EU/4 USD)? Or better – offer to be a Virtual Adopter for one cat for one month? If you can, please let Jelena know! Email: journalistsforanimals@gmail.com
