Yet another dog brutally tortured in Bosnia

By Dalida Kozlic, lawyer

Bosnian rescuers, activists and citizens are shocked by a new case of brutality against a dog.

A badly tortured dog was found near a children’s school in Hrasno, part of Sarajevo, on the 19th February. Two local girls noticed that dog had a very serious wound on his throat and they took him to the veterinary station where a veterinarian confirmed that someone had tried to cut dog’s throat with a knife or other sharp weapon. The wound of the throat was very deep and wide and it was clear that the dog had been brutally attacked.

The dog, named Leon by his rescuers, has been operated on two times so far and he is stable. There is a risk of sepsis but he is under constant veterinary care and all necessary medications are being administered. He very responsive with his rescuers, once again proving the extraordinary faith and trust that dogs have in humans, in spite of being treated so abominably.

All Bosnian media portals have publicised this case and a crimi12742439_10153506451723251_829279088377824959_nnal report has been filled against the currently unknown offender(s). Since the number of cases of torturing of animals has been increasing in Sarajevo, we all want to force the police and prosecutors to find the person or persons who committed this awful crime.

It is more than obvious that Sarajevo is a city filled with psychopaths as this brutal crime proves. Also, there is the fact that the dog was found near a school, surely the law enforcement forces must take notice?

12745727_10153506451798251_7169106808744060280_nIt is evident that there is a someone who enjoys torturing of animals in Hrasno, Sarajevo and therefore all necessary actions should be done in order to identify this person. Animal abusers are psychopaths who intentionally know what they do and who are fully aware of their actions and the consequences, but who do not empathize with other living beings. The most important thing for them is to find satisfaction by expressing power and control over helpless creatures and thus cure their frustrations and / or complexes.

Once again rescuers want to prove that animal abusers are people with pathological personality features, who tend to become abusers and killers of people (if not already). Prosecution and sectioning of animal abusers is a basic function of animal protection. Special prevention sends a message to abusers that if they reoffend their offence against animals, they are to be arrested and punished. This message is thus sent to society that the state and the judiciary do not tolerate animal abuse, and the problem is recognized as a deep social anomaly and that each abuser is to be punished. We need to ensure that these things happen in Bosnia Herzegovina otherwise the abuse will continue.

Leon’s recovery will be a long process and if you want to help rescuers who are taking care of him, you can contact Aida Halilagic and Alma Kovacevic on Facebook. At the time of writing all funds other than 15 euros have been raised to cover the initial operation and one month in the vet clinic, but ongoing care will be needed. You can donate via Paypal to donations@awabosnia.org as per the instructions below, but be sure to mark you donation for LEON.

This poor dog has an opportunity to get better life thanks to these good people. We all hope that he will recover from his injuries but recovery from trauma will be a long process and he will need a safe forever home where he will be safe from evil people. If you can help please contact Aida and Alma as above or send an email to info@awabosnia.org.

The spirit of a tortured dog

In memory of Lilly

Few weeks ago one of my beloved dogs died. Her name was Lilly. My parents and I saved her in April 2013. She was starved and part of her leg was missing. We found out that someone had cut off part of her leg with an axe and left her to die. Lilly had managed to come to the centre of Ilijas where we found her. Her condition was awful. Her leg was infected; she was completely starving, with terrible problems with fleas and stomach problems. Lilly’s leg was amputated since nothing could be done to save it.

For two years Lilly proved to me how wonderful and inspiring stray and tortured dogs can be. She lived my parents and I at our home with other dogs. Lilly was full of life, her spirit wasn’t broken. During that period I saved a lot of dogs including many puppies. Lilly was a mother to all of them, she played with them, taught them how to behave with older dogs, spent time with them. She was an alpha dog in my pack, always full of life and ready to help me with other dogs, to control and take care of them.

During all these years in rescue world I have seen so many cases of tortured animals, I have seen a lot of pain and suffering of innocent beings, I have seen what people can do to those who can’t defend themselves. Also, I have seen that every tortured animal has an unbreakable spirit that every tortured animal can be inspiration for many other animals and for people too. It is difficult to gain trust from tortured animals. During that process every rescuer has an opportunity to learn a lot about understanding and the adaptation of hurt souls and bodies. If we give our best, those animals can learn that there are good people and they can have a normal life without pain and stress. Seeing that an abused animals is recovered is wonderful and the best thing in the rescue process. Healing is difficult process, as well as understanding. Every animal has an individual personality and rescuers must find a way to help that personality to heal.

Thanks to Lilly I found out how an abused animal can help other animals, how she could teach other dogs to be careful, to be good and to recognise good and bad things, and how to become strong dogs with strong personality. Lilly gave her best to be “spirit” of my home, she gave me support with other dogs, and she became a wonderful leader of my pack.

Remember every saved animal must be helped not only to heal wounds on its body, but to heal wounds on its soul. Every saved animal can teach you more good things than all the people you meet in your life, because suffering in silence is the worst thing that exists in the world…

Rescue of dogs from massacre at landfill site, Bosnia

12651168_967546783312216_3930233928752862771_nMany of you read the recent post about the terrible massacre of dogs at the landfill site in Cazin in north west Bosnia Herzegovina. On the 28th rescuers from Sarajevo drove the 300 km to try to rescue the survivors. 17 dogs were rescued, fourteen of these were puppies whose mothers had been killed. The puppies were found wandering around the corpses, desperate for food…  one puppy was badly injured, and one of the adults, both from shot wounds.

12647096_967547379978823_8430212453973404970_nEdina, one of the rescuers, wrote: “Yesterday was a day I will never forget…💔 We got home late yesterday so I didn`t have neither time or strength to write about what happened at the horrible depot in Cazin… First of all, just thinking about where we were going to go and what we were going to see made us feel bad…😞 When we got there we met up with some friends from that place… The entrance to the depot was horrific… There were 10-15 white Roma people there… To be honest I don`t know what to call them... Don`t mean to offend anyone… But when I saw that they threw rocks and garbage from the depot at each other and the way they behaved really scared me…

TRexhen the poor dogs started to run towards us… That made me feel even worse… I didn`t know that there were many dogs left alive there… Our goal was to gather and bring with us all the remaining dogs… According to the information we got, there were supposed to be about 10 puppies and a couple of grown dogs there… But when they started to run towards us, I was shocked… I feared that the people there would attack us and that they would hurt the dogs… I asked them nicely if they could help us rescue the remaining dogs… They laughed and said that they were easy to sell… I got angry and asked them that if they were so easy to sell, why didn`t they sell them? Why were they left here for hunters to kill them? 😡

BabyGirlI was both angry and sad… I told them that I was ready to pay them to help us.. The dogs screamed when they were trying to catch them and they laughed… 😢 It was horrible, but we couldn`t say anything… That was until they lifted one dog by the ears and neck… And then they threw her to the ground… After that chaos broke out… We didn`t have a chance to catch that dog and my heart cries for her… They started to shout all kinds of things towards us and we had to leave… We rescued as many dogs that we could fit into the car…

I`ll never forget this horrible experience… Feel so sorry for the dogs that were left behind… I hope someone can save them…

One of the bigger dogs rescued had survived a bullet… She was rushed to the vet.

12631285_968531123213782_5958951152438642167_nUnfortunately I don`t have any good news to give you about little Hanny who was rescued from the Cazin depot… 😞 While the dogs were running away from the hunters, who were shooting at them, she got shot… She`s badly injured from a shotgun and there are pieces of the shot still left in her body… 😞😢 She`s in a lot of pain and keeps her leg up at the elbow… She cries out if anyone tries to touch her leg… The reason is that this is an old wound and she`s got sepsis…. 😞 Puss is pouring out in big amounts… The little hero has stayed at the clinic and she will stay there for now…

She`s receiving antibiotics, but the vets aren`t able to save her leg… It will have to be urgently amputated… I`m really sad for her, but the most important thing now is to save her life because she`s still in danger… In addition to all of this she has a bad diarrhea… Everything that has happened these last days has really taken my away so much strength from me… It hurts to think about what these poor dogs have been through… While they were killing their friends, sisters and brothers… Hanny and the other survivors tried to run away, but she was still shot… 💔 These hunters are true monsters… Hanny is only a year old and has 8 kilos… 😢 “

tysonAnd this is little Tyson, shot in the hind leg. He is still in the vet clinic. It is a shocking truth that hunters take pleasure in hurting these defenceless dogs who do no harm to anyone, living as they do on the landfill site. And a shocking truth that this goes on all over Bosnia.

Thanks to generous donations many of the puppies have sponsors, and the Harmony Fund has donated towards vet costs. Four puppies have been diagnosed with canine parvovirus which is a devastating illness, but hopefully it has been caught soon enough and not spread to the others. Funds will be needed still, as time goes on and details on how to help are below.

Here is a video of some of the rescued puppies on the way to safety…

And another video when they reached safety…

If you wish to help with ongoing costs of the rescued animals please send 12660478_10205138129233591_1392837363_ndonations via Paypal to donations@awabosnia.org but be sure to mark your donation as ‘Cazin dogs’.

Any saved dogs will stay in Sarajevo until homes are found for them in the UK or Europe. These homes will be thoroughly checked.

Over 250 dogs and cats have been homed with the help of AWABosnia and Help for Furries. If you think you can help with offering a home please send an email to info@awabosnia.org. Also please do share this post far and wide, thank you!
