Puppy burned alive in Bosnia Herzegovina!

blood

Yet more cases of torturing and killing of stray dogs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. An improvised shelter for stray dogs was deliberately set alight in Sarajevo just two days ago (News article here, in Serbo-Croatian). This shelter had been built by local citizens. One puppy was burned alive. Someone came to the shelter and soaked it with gasoline and set it alight, with the dogs inside. Luckily many dogs survived, but not the puppy. This awful case of killing stray animals has been reported to the local police station.

On Monday, a dog was stabbed in Vogosca, a suburb of Sarajevo. The dog was found by a local woman who provided veterinary care for him. The dog has undergone surgery and we do not yet know the outcome.

You know about the recent spate of dog killings by hunters from my last post on the 25th January (Mass Murder of Dogs in Bosnia Herzegovina). This lovely mother and her 8 puppies were amongst the dead:
1501611_583536945067067_477528156_oThe slaughter of dogs continued the following day in Cazin in the Japica Brdo region of BiH (two weeks ago, dogs were slaughtered in this exact area.)

1604769_10151864400501080_1780854358_nThis is a settlement for people, and yet hunters still kill dogs. An animal activist witnessed the hunters putting bodies of the dead dogs on a trailer of their vehicle. The activist telephoned the police and was told that they had already been 1557655_584801938273901_1093159246_ninformed that the hunters would be “cleaning” the hunting area/zone.

A settlement cannot be part of a hunting zone. It appears the police are working together with the hunters. It is reported that only a few small puppies and their mother survived the slaughter.

mother
The mother was only found later, severely traumatised.

The puppies and her mother have been taken into care by local activists who have informed us that the hunters’ club “Jelen” in Cazin appear to be undertaking a killing spree of stray dogs every weekend.

More than 150 dogs were killed in less than 2 weeks.

1653473_584801868273908_1153975034_n1609684_584801971607231_1385262791_n1625689_584801864940575_388355694_n

This kind of killing of strays has been ongoing in BiH for years.

In 2003 the BIH independent newspaper, Nezavisne Novine, published an article with the title Great Action – Stray dog culling in Sanski Most Municipality. 400 dogs were killed by over 200 hunters who were members of the hunting club “Sana”. This action was ordered local authorities. A citizen has reported to us that he remembers this incident well, that he watched the report on television, that around 100 feral cats were also killed. In 2004 the same town was infested with rats and mice and the following year with rodents and snakes. The reason why is obvious.

1512740_584800801607348_1886816112_nHunting of dogs was a common practice in the Prijedor area of Bosnia Herzegovina, where hunters drove around settlements to kill stray dogs. Owned dogs that were not chained were also shot. Such actions were approved and ordered by the municipal veterinary inspector. Hunters were hired to kill dogs and paid 2.5 € per killed dog.

It was common knowledge amongst locals that hunters would cut off tails of the dead dogs to prove how many they killed.

In 2004, Nezavisne Novine published an article stating:

The Municipal Services have organised a culling of stray dogs in Prijedor, to be implemented by workers of the ODK “Komunalne Usluge” (Public Communal company) and by hunters from Prijedor. “During their activities, the hunters will visit the full area of town and after this phase is finished they will visit other individual parts of Prijedor Municipality, the goal being destruction of a large number of stray dogs“, stressed Mrs. Nada Djakovic, assistant for protection of living environment of Prijedor Municipality. She added that the local authorities have assigned around 10,000 BAM (5000 €) for this project and that the City hall in Prijedor has prepared 10,000 BAM to pay hunters for culling of stray dogs in Prijedor municipality.

1656190_584802071607221_1957645484_nBut such practices in Prijedor were stopped after the BiH animal welfare law was passed in 2009, and also because concerned citizens reported certain incidents: in 2005 hunters entered a school yard, killing dogs children had been taking care of. The children witnessed the killings. Disciplinary measures were taken against the police officers involved (the police were supposed to stop hunters from killing dogs during “working hours”).

One witness from this time remembers a hunter saying: “
Only small dogs today. I really want to kill a big one. Guys call me if you see a big one, save it for me.”

Another incident occurred in Prijedor when hunters were killing dogs in the city streets. A hunter fired his gun and a round went through window of a living room where a man was sitting. It was a near miss. Also, unfortunately for them, the hunters killed several purebred dogs belonging to people who were well-connected or somehow involved in local politics. Nevertheless, hunters used as a justification for killings the fact that the culling was announced on local radio and newspapers and that people were advised to keep their dogs chained.

Public pressure against the hunting and killing of dogs, in particular because the hunters they frequently killed dogs that were unchained but on private property in front yards or generally on privately owned land, now means overt hunting of strays in settlement areas of Prijedor is no longer tolerated.

However, hunting and killing of dogs still continues indiscriminately in most parts of Bosnia Herzegovina.

1560423_458511744252717_2020496776_nAlso in January, in Jablanica in BiH, someone poisoned a large number of dogs and cats, including an owned dog. This dog has been deliberately poisoned twice. The dog, with intensive veterinary care, managed to survive, fighting for his life for 20 hours. The poor dog’s body has been damaged, but he still managed to live.

1503395_458511847586040_1433138457_nFrom the same area, below is a video of a street puppy who was poisoned. A young girl found this puppy on street and immediately called the vet. The video was made while she waited for the vet to come, but sadly when the vet arrived, it was too late. The puppy’s little body had no more strength to fight. It is very hard to watch this video, but people need to see how much the strays of Bosnia Herzegovina suffer. This is the worst possible death.

If you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals…you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures.” – Johnny Depp

Also just a few days ago, a dog whose head had been cut off was found in Donji Vakuf (central BiH). The body of the dog was found near the river. Some citizens state that the dog had been hit by a lorry and that a lorry driver threw the dog’s body from the bridge. It remains unclear what happened to the dog. Investigations are undergoing to  try to find out if the dog was really hit by a lorry or his head was cut off.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina torture and killing animals is a criminal offence, punishable by fine or imprisonment. However, the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of such crimes very rarely occur.

Euthanasia, Bosnia-Style

Police officers, prosecutors and judges are not trained to solve and punish animal abusers and killers. Many police officers and prosecutors treat cases of abusing and killing animals as unimportant cases and they violate many laws with such unprofessional behaviour.

Mass Murder of Dogs in Bosnia Herzegovina

1508176_583532625067499_1147273480_nYesterday animal activists found a massacre of dogs who lived at the landfill site, Perna, in Bosanska Krupa region of BiH.

69082_583532605067501_1023165526_nOn the 19th of January, hunters from the “Grmeč” hunting club from Bosanska Krupa shot and killed all dogs that were at the landfill, including puppies and adult dogs and nursing females. At least fifty dogs were murdered. To cover up what they did, the hunders buried the dead dogs under piles of garbage, but they did not manage to hide all the corpses.

994130_583532871734141_412139559_nActivists from the area were about to start making dog houses for these dogs at the landfill, and were visiting dogs regularly, feeding them.

1538823_572414449512650_829759911_n

Amra Dervisevic, the activist who took these photographs and who discovered the atrocity has filed criminal charges against the hunting club and has reported what happened to the cantonal inspectorate. There are witnesses who saw everything, landfill workers, but they remain silent because they are afraid of repurcussions. Amra Dervisevic has already been threatened.

Dogs and puppies when they were alive…

1517467_572414739512621_2101621038_n1009852_572413482846080_193876733_n

It is reported that also on the 19th of January, another group of dogs were killed in Klen, in Cazin municipality, part of Bosanska Krupa region. A total of 36 dogs are reported killed.

These kinds of horrors are frequent in Bosnia Herzegovina. Activists have been actively campaigning to improve the enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act, which states that such atrocities are against the law. Yet there are those who wish to amend the Act making it easier for continued violence against strays.

The next voting on such proposed amendments to the Animal Welfare Act of Bosnia Herzegovina was supposed to be yesterday but the session of House of Peoples was cancelled. A new session won’t be scheduled until February. (If these amendments are passed, a legal framework will be introduced that will allow for thousands of stray dogs to be caught, held for 15 days and then killed if not claimed, including the more than 3000 stray dogs who have been sterilised by Dogs’ Trust UK in June 2013. More information in earlier posts on this blog.)

DOG TORTURED WITH WIRE IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA!

1010771_614221755311389_1688571365_nLast night animal welfare charity Andjeo Sarajevo were contacted about a tortured dog in Vlakovo, a small village north-west of Sarajevo. Someone had tied a wire around the dog’s neck and leg. When Andjeo Sarajevo arrived, they found a sad little female dog, weighing only around 10kg when she should weigh at least three times this much.
1551708_614220628644835_452500679_n

She was clearly frightened, afraid of her own shadow. A sharp wire was deeply embedded in her neck and leg.
7553_614221861978045_905436711_nWe don’t know how long she has howled, how long she’s been suffering like this. A long time. Her leg is completely atrophied, has developed sepsis and is deformed, with all the skin peeled back… a living horror. Andjeo Sarajevo caught her by using a low dose sedative, it was the only way as she was so terrified and would not let anyone close. They took her straight to a vet, and under the bright light on the vet’s table the poor dog’s horror was even worse.

1013925_614221125311452_898093697_nAndjeo Sarajevo write: “We couldn’t believe how far human malice and evil can go, how much people will take out their anger on animals…. The photos will tell you a whole lot more. According to the vet, this was done on purpose, the wire was so tightly embedded into the neck and leg that she couldn’t put her leg down, it just dangled in the air…. only she and the monster who did this to her know how long she’s been like this. Because of the injuries to the neck caused by the embedded wire, it’s possible she’ll never be able to bark again, she’ll never be able to let her voice be heard again… Her pain is immense.

body The vet said the leg must be amputated, and that her chances of survival are good. But if it is possible for her to ever trust people again, we don’t know. We need help to cover vet costs and her after care, and one day, when she is healed we must find her a very special home.

1510801_614223261977905_328848485_n If you make a donation or can sponsor her care, (see below) please mark for “tortured dog.” She’s not been given a name yet, as soon as she has I’ll update this page.

Latest news, p.m. 21st January
She’s been named “Faith”.
“Our little fighter is a bit better today, the vet says chances are she will survive. Her leg needs to be amputated, it wasn’t done today because she was on a drip and received vitamins, we bought her sausage and yoghurt to eat. She is a real fighter and we really hope she will survive the amputation tomorrow. The vets don’t think she should be put down, they want to save this tormented soul and give her the chance to experience a bit of human warmth, kindness and love.”

Latest news, summer 2014
Faith has been in the UK in a wonderful home since April. She’s still very shy of people, but loves her two dog playmates, and is clearly happy. Her health is excellent.

GLEE, the miracle cat who survived terrible abuse

beforeafterOn the 1st of December 2013, animal rescue charity Andjeo Sarajevo found two animals in a desperate situation, a cat with blood pouring out of her eyes and a puppy with a serious and infected leg wound. The puppy, Cara, had to have her leg amputated, but this is the story of the cat, who everyone thought had to be put to sleep. She was named Glee. Glee has made such a remarkable recovery her story deserves to be read by the world. I will tell her story through the words of Andjeo Sarajevo as they posted up her progress on Facebook:

glee

December 1, 2013 Bloody day. I have no words to describe the pain I’m feeling. The pictures say more than I can now say, a cat left on the street to die in agony and poor puppy only a month and a half old also left to die, to suffer.. We took them both to the vet on call. The cat, named Glee we think received a hard hit in the head. She purrs. can you imagine, we went with the intention to cut her of her misery and to put her to sleep, but the vet said that all she needs is eye surgery.  We have to make x-ray on Monday to confirm nothing else is broken and then she will have eye surgery. Even in this condition she is full of life, as soon as I lay my hand on her, she starts to purr and I have no words to describe what am I feeling.. What happened to her no one knows, maybe a car, maybe someone hit her… We don’t know and we never will.. one thing is for sure, she wants to live…

1483090_590574784342753_767356202_n
December 2, 2013 Glee has been left in the clinic, luckily she has nothing else that’s broken. According to the vet the only explanation for her injuries is that someone picked at her eyes with something sharp on purpose. She purrs as soon as you speak to her, she purrs as soon as you lay a hand on her, yet someone has ruined her life and made an invalid of her. We’re in shock thinking that someone could do this do a helpless animal who is not in a position to harm anyone… This is too much.
1471142_590574781009420_816550133_n

December 3, 2013 She won’t be operated on today because she has an infection, first she needs to go on a drip, and have antibiotics and analgesics, before she is able to handle an anaesthetic. We think neither of her eyes can be saved, we had hoped to be able to save at least one but I think they are destroyed. We hope the person who did this to her suffers the same fate.

1483073_592044100862488_748498574_n

December 4, 2013 Glee has been operated on, she survived the operation and it was a success! They managed to save one of her eyes, but we are unsure if she will be able to see at all because she has a hematoma in it. They have been applying ointment to her eye and we are hoping for the best. She is currently on a drip, she still can’t eat alone, she’s also on antibiotics and is receiving painkillers. The worst is over.

December 9, 2013 Glee says Hello! she is doing very well!

December 19, 2013 Glee at home with us. She is a fighter!

996776_602243423175889_301782446_n

December 26, 2013 Dear friends, this is our Glee. Do you recognise her? Every day she is better and better… we are very satisfied with her progress, all our efforts have paid off. Thanks to you all she has everything she needs, the best food, therapy, and everything a cat could wish for. The hematomas on her eye are fading, the vet’s opinion that she was going to end up with a big red marble as an eye has been proven wrong! Look at her beautiful green eye, of course she still has a hematoma but it’s fading, she still can’t see with that eye but we believe with all our heart that she will soon be able to.

gleecuddle

January 15, 2013 Today when I look at pictures of how they were before, my stomach turns… Especially Glee, I look at her photos and then at her, and I think to myself “These are not the same animals”.. Glee is so happy, so fat, she loves to cuddle, she tries to play as well, she’s adapted really well to her condition and to the fact she only has one eye and can only see about 20% with the other, my God she has been through so much…

cara

About Cara, well we’ve had several cases of amputated “tripod” dogs, but not one has looked as sad and sweet as she does… When you look at their pictures and then at them and breathe deeply, a lump forms in your throat… they’ve been through so much… but their success and their will to stay alive give me great strength, strength that I sometimes lose, recently we’ve had a lot of bad moments, but they, the animals, give us strength and return the smiles to our faces… We will never give up, we will never abandon them.. NEVER. Thanks to all our dear friends for all the support and help.

GleemainThe great news is that we have found Glee a wonderful forever home in Finland.  We need to make arrangements for her travel and to fundraise for the costs. If you can help and would like to sponsor her travel arrangements, please let us know.

Nearly every day there is a desperate case like Glee. Animal rescuers need our support to save these animals. Also there are many rescued dogs and cats that need homes, please visit our Facebook Dogs and Cats for Adoption page where we are slowly adding albums of all the animals we are helping who are up for adoption. If you think you can offer one of them a home, or little puppy Cara, please contact us at info@awabosnia.org.

Abandoned Puppies Need Your Help!

main

A few days ago, an animal advocate in Sarajevo found four puppies in a burnt out, ruined building.

1551507_611214655612099_916262858_n
1504542_611214728945425_549324950_n1517635_611214115612153_204784157_n

The puppies were struggling to survive alone, as they had no mother. We don’t know what happened to her.

1526629_611214185612146_1580700984_n

The puppies’ stomachs looked swollen with parasites and they were overall in a bad condition, with matted fur and runny eyes. They were fed, given bedding and the word was put out for help, to see if someone could take the puppies away from this awful place, to safety.

puppyonblanket

Here is a video showing how starving they were, gobbling up the food brought to them:

Yesterday, Andjeo Sarajevo, animal welfare charity, went to rescue them from certain death or at best, a terrifying life on the streets. They drove to the area, Slatina, and found the building. With help from friends they managed to catch all four, wrapping them up in blankets.

Andjeo Sarajevo took them immediately to a vet for examination and then to pension (kennels).

1555483_611215942278637_908075489_n

This is what Andjeo Sarajevo wrote on their Facebook post yesterday:

“From today there will be no more hunger or freezing in that awful draughty ruin where someone left them. They are finally in a safe place where they will have regular meals and where they will be warm. We took them for a check up straight away as they were full of worms, they had stomachs like beach balls. They’ve been dewormed and given vitamins. A big thank you to to everyone who helped us catch the babies and get them somewhere safe. They have no mum, they were left to fend for themselves and die in that ruin… “

puppy

We have named these lovelies  Duke, Prince, King and Count. Thanks to quick response, some money was donated to help with the initial costs, but we still need funds to make sure they stay safe and off the streets and are monitored by the vet. Just a few days ago, Andjeo Sarajevo rescued another group of five puppies, but they quickly showed signs of distemper and all died just in the last two days. Please help us make sure these four new puppies stay healthy and if you think you can offer one of them a home, please contact us at info@awabosnia.org

Peter and his wife Myra own several rescue dogs and have adopted a rescue dog from Bosnia Herzegovina, from rescuer Milena Malesevic. Peter sat cuddling some of the rescued dogs while he gave his inspiring speech, it was very touching. He also read a piece from Vic Ferguson, who was a NATO soldier in Sarajevo in 1995 and 1996, and who is now actively supporting the campaign against dog abuse and cruelty in BiH. Vic is responsible for creating the group Phoenix Rising, a non-profit organisation set up to support sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress through animal therapy.

Official press release for the protest:

PROTEST AGAINST DOG KILLING IN ROMANIA AND BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA

UK citizens Elaine Renton and Mandy Kataria have organized a protest on Saturday, January 11th, 2014 from 1:00 until 3 p.m. outside the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London, to raise awareness about the mass extermination of strays in Romania and Bosnia Herzegovina.

If the Bosnia Herzegovina Parliament’s proposed amendments to current animal welfare legislation are passed, a legal framework will be introduced that will allow for thousands of stray dogs to be caught, held for 15 days and then killed if not claimed, including the more than 3000 stray dogs who have been sterilised by Dogs’ Trust UK in June 2013.

Dogs’ Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, has been running an intervention programme in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo since 2012, where there are an estimated 12,000 stray dogs. Dog’s Trust wrote: “Euthanasia will be completely ineffective at reducing the numbers of dogs being abandoned.”

Activists in Bosnia Herzegovina state that the proposed amendments to the law are intended to mask illegal killing of strays and other ongoing violations to current legislation, including misuse of funds intended for dogs in public shelters and for spay-neuter programs.

For Bosnia there is some hope: the Constitutional-Legal Committee of the House of Peoples have refused the amendments, and instead have recommended that an action plan for the implementation of the existing law be instituted. However the opinion of this committee was neither united, nor is obligatory and activists maintain that pressure must be continued to ensure delegates will respect this decision during the next Parliament voting session.

In Romania, however, the Constitutional Court passed a law last September allowing the euthanasia of dogs after 14 days spent in dog shelters if not adopted or perished before this time. The approval and implementation of this law has produced worldwide condemnation and a perception that Romania is a country which introduces medieval practices and governs in a draconian mode.

“Euthanasia” in dog shelters in Romania and Bosnia Herzegovina is purported to be carried out by: poisoning, strangling; burning alive; beaten to death; and injecting with bleach, vinegar, paint thinner and other chemical substances.

Regarding the voting on the proposed amendments to the Animal Welfare Act of BiH, we are waiting to hear when the next vote will be. We believe sometime at the end of January. Please read this post:  One Step Forward for the Strays of Bosnia Herzegovina!

All information is in the related posts listed below. If there is anything further we can do I will keep you updated. Please help by keep writing to your MEPs, Embassies, media etc. No matter what the outcome of the voting is, the situation in BiH has been bad for strays for so long, including numerous and continued transgressions of the existing animal welfare law, we just have to keep at it, keep uncovering illegalities and keep campaigning to ensure the humane treatment of all animals in the country.

As stated in other posts, the activists need our support with donations to help them campaign. Even if the law goes through, there is much they can do: all shelters need to be closely monitored to try to ensure that any ‘euthanisation’ as required by these proposed amendments is humane and that all other aspects of the Animal Welfare Law are implemented. Any amount will help, no matter how small.

There is a YouCaring fundraiser especially for this:  https://www.youcaring.com/kill-law. Activists in BiH are doing their best to campaign against these amendments and to educate everyone in their country to the truth of what is happening.

Please sign and share the petitions!
